5 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Contractor

Protect yourself and your budget by asking these five questions before you sign anything with a remodeling contractor.

Hiring the right contractor is the single biggest factor in whether your project goes smoothly. Before you sign, ask these five questions.

1. Are you licensed and insured?

Ask to see proof of both. A licensed, insured contractor protects you if something goes wrong on the job site — an uninsured one leaves you holding the bag.

2. Can I see recent work and references?

Photos are nice, but talking to a recent client tells you what it’s actually like to work with someone. Ask about communication, cleanliness, and whether the job finished on budget.

3. Is this a fixed quote or an estimate?

These are very different. A fixed quote commits to a price; a loose “estimate” can balloon. Make sure you understand exactly what’s included — and what would trigger a change order.

4. Who will actually be on site?

Some companies sell the job with one person and send a rotating crew of subs. Ask who’s running your project day to day and who you’ll call with questions.

5. What does your warranty cover?

A good contractor stands behind their work in writing. Ask how long the workmanship warranty lasts and what’s covered.
